Richard Liebson, Longtime Journalist In Westchester, Dies At 61

Richard Liebson, a longtime journalist in Westchester, died Sunday, in White Plains at age 61, according to The Journal News/lohud.com, where he worked for decades.

Liebson had cancer for about two years, according to the article.

Liebson was a crime reporter for more than 30 years at The Journal News. The article says he was one of the newspaper's "best-known writers and characters, a beat reporter of the old school."

He covered the City of White Plain most recently, according to The Journal News. Liebson covered big stories including a 1994 propane-truck explosion in White Plains to a sniper’s killing of Eastchester Police Officer Michael Frey in 1996 to the fatal shooting of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. by White Plains police after Chamberlain accidentally triggered a life-alert alarm in 2011, said The Journal News.

Liebson was born on Jan. 14, 1958, in Landstuhl, Germany, and grew up on bases in Germany and the United States. His father was in the Air Force, according to The Journal News.

Liebson graduated from Valhalla High School in 1976. He served in the U.S. Army from 1976 to 1980 and wrote for Stars and Stripes before joining Westchester Rockland Newspapers in 1983. He went on to work at The Journal News where he was an editor and columnist.

Liebson married Victoria Hochman on June 15, 1996. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Morgan Shelby and Rebecca Liebson of White Plains, two brothers, Bruce Liebson of Greenwich, and David Liebson of Carmel, and two sisters, Liza Liebson and Laura Liebson of Acapulco, Mexico, said The Journal News.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 30 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home in White Plains. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m.
