Lacey Spears, 26, had her son, Garnett-Paul Spears, admitted to Nyack Hospital for seizures and an unexplained spike in sodium levels, the district attorney said. Garnett-Paul Spears was then transferred to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he was declared dead on Jan. 23, 2014.
Hospital officials believe Spears intentionally harmed her son by putting sodium into his feeding tube. Spears, however claims Garnett needed the sodium to help treat a chronic condition, according to News 12 Westchester.
Garnett-Paul Spears was declared dead in January. Lacey Spears has since been charged with one count of second-degree depraved murder and one count of first-degree manslaughter.
If found guilty, Spears faces a maximum sentence of 25 years-to-life in prison, according to the district attorney.
Lacey Spears was held without bail after surrendering on Tuesday, June 17 and spent the night in Westchester County Jail, according to News 12 Westchester. Click here to see the full story.
