GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Several Greenburgh organizations are making the effort to spread holiday cheer to less fortunate children this year.
The Hartsdale Fire Department is holding drop-off centers for "Toys for Tots," the nationwide program of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve that collects new, unwrapped toys to distribute as Christmas gifts to children in need. Ray Masdea, a Hartsdale Fire Department captain, said the department has been working in conjunction with the program as a collection center for several decades.
"I think it's a great way to make a donation for the holidays," Masdea said.
Toys for Tots drop-off centers are at both Hartsdale fire stations, 25 S. Central Ave. and 300 W. Hartsdale Ave. Additional drop-off locations around town include the front entrances to K-mart on Tarrytown Road and Dannon Yogurt Co. on 100 Hillside Ave.
Elmsford Village Hall also has a toy drop-box until Dec. 10. All toys will be distributed to local children, according to the Elmsford village website.
For the first time ever, the Greenburgh Nature Center, 99 Dromore Road, will partner with Open Door Family Medical Center, an affordable health-care provider with multiple locations throughout Westchester County, to donate collected toys to children in families who aren't able to afford the gifts.
The box is already filled to the brim, and the Greenburgh Nature Center has had to clear its space so more people could donate, said Vicki Sherman, Greenburgh Nature Center marketing director.
"We've been working with other nonprofits more lately, coordinating efforts with different groups, and the Open Door came to our attention," Sherman said. "We think it's a great cause, and we thought we could help a lot of people."
The Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has also set up a toy-donation center at Greenburgh Town Hall and will accept unwrapped toys tonight from 7 to 9 in the first floor auditorium, said Alumnae President Margaret Bing-Wade.
