Elmsford Close to Finishing Changing Water Meters

ELMSFORD, N.Y. -- The village is close to finishing changing all of the water meters in Elmsford.

Starting last July, the village began the project on the south side, completing 575 meters. Moving over to the north end, Elmsford has changed about 600 meters and has only about 20 left to finish.

Final notices will be sent to the 20 stragglers within the next week. Those property owners must make an appointment to allow village personnel access to the meters or their service will be turned off, according to Village Administrator/Clerk Michael Mills.

"Some people are just so hard to catch them home," said Deputy Mayor William Zimkin. "They don't realize the code says we have to be able to access your meter. It's to their benefit."

Mills explained the old meters had a hard wire that went from the meter to a reader on the outside of the building, resulting in continual maintenance. With the new system everything is contained in the meter head.

Despite an equipment cost of about $140,000 to switch systems, Mills said the new meters will substantially reduce manpower hours to read them. It would take three employees two weeks to read all of the meters in the village. With the new meters, it will only take one or two days.

Property owners in Elmsford are billed quarterly for water use.
