A homeless man in Westchester County attempted to sell a stolen dog near Mount Vernon that has since been returned to its owner.

On Valentine’s Day, Steven Carino, of Bedford, reported that his dog was stolen from his car while it was parked in a Scarsdale shopping center. The missing dog led to a massive search in Westchester and a posted $5,000 reward.

“Oliver, my beloved dog was stolen out of my car on Valentine’s Day at 1119 Central Park (Ave.),” he wrote on a flier as he attempted to track down his canine. “I ran into the cigar store to buy a few cigars. If you took him, or you know anything about his whereabouts, I beg you to please return him to me.

“We mean the world to each other and he must be terrified. I am offering a cash reward of $5,000 and no questions asked! Please, we love each other very much and go everywhere together.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, Oliver’s family received a break, when they were told that a homeless man living in the area of North Bond Street in Mount Vernon was attempting to sell the pup for $250 out of a truck. A woman was approached to purchase the dog and was able to take a picture that she shared with Carino. The truck was ultimately determined to be stolen, and was subsequently towed by police in Mount Vernon.

Once the man was identified, investigators began a search to track down the suspect and Oliver, which ended with a teary reunion with his relieved father. It turns out some Good Samaritans in Mount Vernon had found the dog on the street, took him to work, gave him a bath and took care of him until Carino could come retrieve his best buddy.

The family has since posted several videos online thanking the community for the happy ending, never letting the dog out of his arms.
