Wash your windows. Keeping glass clean provides natural light and crystal clear views when windows are closed for the season. It’s also a good idea to remove and wash all screens and thoroughly vacuum outer sills.

Clean dryer vent. Trapped lint is a fire hazard and can also reduce the efficiency of a dryer. Unplugging and moving the machine makes it easy to clear any lint trapped in the vent.

Disinfect airflow vents and replace HVAC filters. With less fresh air circulating throughout the home, it’s a good feeling knowing that vents are free of added dust, dander, and pathogens. Having windows open throughout the summer invites a host of invisible invaders which can clog vents and filters.

Clean all walls. Clean walls reflect light better, which is beneficial as days grow shorter and darker. A simple bucket with soap and water can remove dirt, fingerprints and other seasonal grime.

Clean and inspect all fireplaces, chimneys, and flues. Before curling up by the fire for the first time this fall, be sure to check for cracks, blockage and other potential fireplace hazards. Each year, tens of thousands of homes experience fire damage due to faulty fireplaces and clogged chimneys.
