The incident began around 8:55 p.m., on Friday, May 17, when 911 received numerous calls of a fight in the area of Thompson Street, said City of Poughkeepsie Capt. Richard Wilson.

When police, detectives, and members of the Neighborhood Recovery Unit responded to the scene they found that numerous juveniles had fled the area all on bicycles, Wilson said.

Four juveniles on bikes were located and detained at Main and Clinton streets. One victim positively identified the juveniles as being involved, and all were taken to the City of Poughkeepsie Juvenile Aid Bureau, he said.

As police resources were expended with the above four, one detective remained at the Thompson Street address. A short time later, other involved juveniles returned to the Thompson Street address.

Additional units were requested to assist. As units arrived, these juveniles fled on bikes, three of which struck an uninvolved citizen.

The victim was knocked to the ground causing lacerations and the loss of several teeth, and was transported to a local hospital by Mobile Life, Wilson said.

Officers witnessed the above incident and during the subsequent apprehension, two City of Poughkeepsie Police officers were injured. Both were treated at a local hospital and released. However, they will remain out of work pending further medical evaluations.

One of the apprehended juveniles was charged with felony attempted burglary as well as coercion. This juvenile was being held pending arraignment. The other juveniles were released to parents or guardians pending review and evaluation by the Dutchess County attorney’s office.

The Town of Hyde Park police assisted in the investigation by providing a Spanish speaking officer. The Dutchess County Sheriff’s office assisted with calls for service during the incident.
