PAWLING, N.Y. -- Elmer S. “Rusty” Smith, of Pawling, died on Friday, Jan. 20. He was 65.

Born in Poughkeepsie on Sept. 7, 1951, he was the son of the late Elmer E. Smith, Jr. and Marion Webb. After graduating from Pawling High School, he went to a trade school and became a member of Local 157 United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. He married Patricia Cann in St. John’s Church, Pawling on Oct. 20, 1973. He worked as a carpenter for the NYC Housing Authority. He was a boy scout helper for many years, and an active and enthusiastic fan of his children and grandchildren’s sports. He was a Friend of Bill W. for over 22 years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pat; two sons, Christopher (Jill) and Timothy; his grandchildren, Kayla and Kevin Smith; two brothers, Bruce (Jill) Smith and David (Jackie) Smith; two sisters, Janet Townsend and Patricia (Richard) Schaniel.

Family and friends may call at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main St., Pawling Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass is Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Church, Pawling; burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Pawling.
