Rensselaer County resident Robert Thomas, age 35, of the town of Stephentown, was arrested Monday, May 22, on charges of grand larceny and forgery.
According to State Police, a Schenectady County homeowner initially contacted troopers in July 2022 claiming to be the victim of a construction scam.
The homeowner told troopers they had signed a work agreement with Thomas’ company, MZX Construction, in May 2021 and had paid him for renovation work that was to be completed.
In April 2022, Thomas presented the victim with a forged receipt stating that he had ordered building supplies when he had not actually done so, according to police. He then asked the customer for more money.
By March 2023, the victim had paid Thomas over $23,000.
Troopers said the work was never finished and Thomas refused to give the customer their money back.
Thomas is charged with the following:
- Third-degree grand larceny
- Third-degree forgery
He turned himself in at the State Police facility in Princetown, and was being held at the Schenectady County jail ahead of his arraignment.
MZX Construction has two complaints on its Better Business Bureau (BBB) page, both of which accuse Thomas of performing shoddy work and then cutting off all communication when they asked for remedies or refunds.
