White Plains resident Annabelle Herrmann experienced a life-changing event in early December when a troubling health issue led to the discovery of a tumor behind her left eye.
What began as double vision suspected to be caused by an internal stye quickly escalated after Annabelle’s symptoms worsened. Following a visit to an ophthalmologist, doctors determined her eyes were healthy but suspected an issue behind her left eye. Further imaging at Westchester Medical Center revealed a golf-ball-sized tumor.
Annabelle was soon admitted to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, where she underwent a series of tests, including MRIs, CT scans, and a PET scan. On Wednesday, Dec. 11, she underwent surgery to remove most of the tumor and was later diagnosed with orbital rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.
In the weeks since this terrible diagnosis, Jenna Velez, a friend of the Herrmann family, has created a GoFundMe page to help with mounting medical expenses and other costs, including parking fees, tolls, and specialized items like a $500 Halo wig for Annabelle.
"There are a lot of unknowns at this time, and the hope is that insurance will provide the coverage they need, but even with that the expenses will be extensive," Velez wrote on the page.
Since its creation, the fundraiser has already collected nearly $54,000, which is approaching the overall goal of $75,000.
"While this has been an incredibly challenging time for the Herrmanns, your prayers, love, and support provide immeasurable strength," Velez wrote in response to the help.
