MAHOPAC, N.Y. The defending Section 1 and New York State Class D Tuckahoe Tigers football team could not sustain an early lead Saturday and were outplayed in the second half as Haldane fought back to a 25-14 victory in the Class D championship game at Mahopac High School.
Haldane (8-1), the No. 1 seed, scored 25 unanswered points after being down 14-0 in the first quarter and made several big plays in the second and third quarters in the comeback over the second-seeded Tigers, who finished the season at (6-3). It was the Blue Devils first Section 1 title since 2007.
Tuckahoe struck early on a 35-yard scoring pass from sophomore quarterback Mike Castracucco to L.J. Gallo, who slipped past the Haldane defense into the left corner of the end zone. Gallo made the extra-point kick for a 7-0 Tigers lead.
Tuckahoe scored again late in the second quarter when Shyheim Nixon raced in from the 7-yard line to cap a 54-yard drive and the tigers led 14-0 early in the second quarter.
Haldane cut the lead to 14-7 and looked in danger of allowing another score when Castracucco was intercepted on the Haldane 5-yard line to end a probable scoring drive.
The second half belonged to Haldane, which had lost the last three Section 1 Class D title games to Tuckahoe. Down 14-13, Haldane intercepted Castracucco again inside the Tigers 30-yard line and ran in for a score to take a 19-14 lead as the third quarter ended.
