Sixty-two percent of the 225 participants were parents with children in the district, with further feedback coming from administrators, students, faculty members and members of the community without a child in school.
The top-rated characteristics included selecting a candidate that promotes high expectations for the district and has a clear vision of what is required to provide strong educational services and implement effective change. The stakeholders are seeking someone that could increase academic performance and accountability, while listening and representing the interests of the community.
The survey found that parents were far more likely to look for someone that would promote high expectations for all students and personnel than faculty, though faculty members were more likely to seek a superintendent that fosters a positive professional climate of mutual trust and respect among faculty, staff and administrators.
Community members and faculty preferred to see the next superintendent “be visible throughout the district and actively engaged in community life, while the six students that participated in the survey wanted to recruit a candidate that would employ, evaluate and retain effective personnel in the school district.
