TUCKAHOE, N.Y. - Voters in Tuckahoe narrowly voted against a $20 million bond referendum that would have addressed an expected increase in enrollment.

The Tuckahoe Board of Education had proposed a $20,531,500 bond that would “address the district’s current facility needs and educational goals, (which includes) growing enrollment, 21st Century learning, infrastructure and security upgrades.”

On Tuesday, voters in the village opted against it, with 411 “yes” votes against 447 “no” votes.

If it had passed, school officials said it would result in an estimated $598 annual tax increase for a home with an assessed value of $8,500.

Highlights of the plan included the addition of eight new classrooms and a complete renovation and expansion of the current gym at William E. Cottle School. The proposal called for a renovation of the libraries and cafeterias at Cottle and the Tuckahoe Middle/High School.

The plan also included funding for the replacement of the turf athletic field at the high school and the installation of a new grass playfield at Cottle. It was not immediately clear what steps the district would now take moving forward.
