Tuckahoe's Edward Birdie, 86, Honored Friday

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. - Edward Birdie died Feb. 5 at his home in Tuckahoe. He was 86.

Birdie was retired as treasurer of the international division of Richard Vicks Corporation. Locally, he served as president of American Legion Scarsdale Post 52 and as committee member of Boy Scout Troop 2 in Tuckahoe and Eastchester.

Born July 4, 1925, he grew up in various Queens, N.Y. neighborhoods, including Middle Village, Maspeth and Glendale. Birdie enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 18 and served on a landing craft infantry in the South Pacific. World War II military service and the hardships of growing up during the great depression instilled within him a deep belief of family, hard work and responsibility.

A graduate of Champlain College of State University of New York, he was married to his wife Corinne for over 60 years. Birdie was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church for seven decades. He also served as president of the Gardiner's Bay Estates Homeowners Association in East Marion, N.Y.

Nicknamed "Big Ed," he delighted in taking his grandchildren out on his boat to fish and water-ski during summers on the North Fork of Long Island, N.Y.

Birdie is survived by his wife Corinne, his sons Edward J. (Angela Ottomanelli) Birdie and Charles (Lesley) Birdie, his daughter Janet (Greg) Prato and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Westchester Funeral Home in Eastchester. The funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jansen Memorial Hospice, 69 Main St., Tuckahoe, NY 10707 or to any charity.
