POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. Jake Agosto led the men and Laurel Squadron was the leading womens finisher for the Purchase College cross country team that placed seventh out of 11 teams at this weekend's Vassar College Invitation meet.
Agosto ran 22:03 over the 6-kilometer course for the Panthers men, while Squadron ran a 21:54 over 5 kilometers.
Julian Norton (24:26), Samir Mckrami (25:33) and Christian Cepeda (28:36) followed Agosto home and Colleen Walker (23:13), Jessica Phumalee (24:31) and Jessica Hojohn (24:55) ran just behind Squadron.
Jake, Julian and Christian paced themselves very well, Purchase coach and Tuckahoe resident Christian Fuller said.
All four men have a very positive and supportive attitude. Jose Buitrago did not run due to injury, but will run Purchase Invitational next week.
Squadron, who placed 19th overall, and team captain Walker, who came in 31st position, enjoyed a spirited in-team competition as the Panthers outran rival Bard 179-189 to take seventh.
"I felt good but (the race) was really hard, Squadron said. "I will try and run faster than Laurel at our invitational, Walker said. Im just happy we beat Bard." Assistant coach Liam McGuirk liked what he saw in the teams first competition.
"We have a cohesive group, positive sense of motivation and purpose in what they are doing," McGuirk said. Theres a diverse range of ability and some (runners) are showing critical role on team in leadership. Most important is the midsection of team -- strong potential and we want to strengthen the midsection."
