Senior Andrew Schultz has been nominated by Coach Fred DiCarlo for the “Heart of a Giant” award, and now he needs his community’s help to help him become a finalist, which will benefit the Eastchester High School football program.
The “Heart of a Giant” award is “based on an athlete’s demonstration of commitment, dedication, will, character and teamwork. Candidates must possess a strong work ethic, leadership skills, the desire to succeed both on the field and in the classroom and the ability to inspire others to work together to achieve a common goal.”
In his nomination letter, Schultz – who also stars on the basketball team – was asked which of those characteristics he most embodied.
“Commitment is defined as the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause or activity,” he wrote. “I love the game of football. I am committed to the game of football. I started playing in seventh grade and the sport has taught me determination, discipline, responsibility and what it takes to be a leader.”
Schultz is up against nine other standout high school football players throughout the tri-state area - including Brady Tuttle out of Pelham - that were named nominees in week four.
The winners will be based on the number of votes received in the USA Football poll. Voters can do so once every 24 hours per device. The voting concludes on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Six finalists will receive a $1,500 equipment grant for their high school football programs, with a grand prize winner receiving an additional $3,500 for the program.
