Croton Welcomes Fifth Annual Toughman Event

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Croton Point will be the jumping off spot Saturday and Sunday when more than 1,200 adults and 700 youngsters will challenge themselves in the Fifth Annual Toughman Half Iron, ToughTeen and ToughKids triathlons.

“We’re looking forward to the event again this year,” organizer Richard Izzo said. “The most exciting part of the event for me is the inclusion of so many young people who are dedicated to training and good health. We’re expecting a big day."

The Toughman half-triathlon begins with the 1-mile swim event in the Croton Point Bay area of the Hudson River, followed by a 56-mile bike course from Croton Point Avenue along Route 9/9A, which will be closed to traffic. The event concludes with a half marathon (13.1 miles) which will traverse local roads and trails under and over the Croton Dam.

The first ToughTeen event for athletes 15-19 year olds will be held on Sunday as part of the two-day challenge. The teens will swim 300 yards, bike 6 miles and run 2.5 miles. The ToughKids event includes children in age groups 4-6, 7-10 and 11-14 with increasing event distances for each group. The ToughKids swim from 20 yards for the youngest group to 200 yards for the 14-17 age group, bike from 1 mile to 5 miles and run from 20 yards to 1 mile for the older teens.

The total purse for the event is $4,500 and includes prizes in Top Male, Top Female in age groups and overall, Top Clydsdales (Over 200 pounds), Top Athenas (Over 150 pounds), First Responders, Top military, Top Relay, Top Corporate Challenge and Top Tri Club.

“We stress health, safety, good nutrition and community," said Izzo, a chiropractor who is a top amateur triathlete. "We invite everyone in the Westchester communities to come out and support us. It’s a thrilling event.”
