CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. -- Hendrick Hudson High School artists and student-athletes celebrated the completion of three art installations designed to build and maintain school spirit.

The artwork is located at the top, middle and bottom of a wide staircase that leads from the high school’s gym down to the playing field – designed so visiting teams in particular will see them as they enter the building. The first artwork, just inside the building, is a magnificent mosaic that reads “You’re in Sailor Country” with sidebars reading “Anchored to Community” and “Dedicated to Excellence.”

The second artwork is a painted mural listing all of the sports played at Hen Hud and bearing the motto, “When we stand together we become INVINCIBLE.”

The final and smallest artwork, near the gym entrance, is a three-dimensional diorama of an underwater game of “capture the flag,” with “teams” of papier-mâché mermaids and sailors. Students who worked on the projects, parents, administrators and art teacher Jan Aiello gathered at a ceremony to talk about the artwork's meaning.

Aiello described in detail how the project evolved from an idea to sketches to reality. She thanked everyone who participated in the process, from Director of School Facilities, Operations and Maintenance Anthony Merlini to Principal Mackin, to the artists who helped to realize the concept of each design.
