“I was always interested in real estate,” Ward said. “I didn’t feel I had the opportunity while my children were young. This job takes time and flexibility in order to be successful."

Ward worked as a paraprofessional in a school district in Michigan, helping to mainstream students from foreign countries into their American classroom.

“I was on the same schedule as my kids and I enjoyed the job,’’ Ward said. “I was also involved in the early stages of technology within the school district. I was part of the launch of computers being an integral part of the classroom.”

A native of Toronto, she moved to Michigan with her husband, Bob where they raised their two sons. In 2000 they moved to the East Coast and settled in Ossining in 2003. Her grown sons were away at college and Barbara found time on her hands. Her husband suggested that she consider a career in real estate, something she was always interested in.

“I went to open houses on my own and spent time driving around Westchester County getting to know the lay of the land," she said. With three relocation experiences over four years, Ward felt she could make a difference for people moving into the area and became licensed in 2005.

Ward has blossomed into one of the top producers in the Houlihan Lawrence Yorktown Brokerage 89-member office. She received Silver Awards in 2007, 2009 and 2010, Gold Awards in 2012, 2013 and 2014, and a Platinum Award in 2011. She has received the Five Star Award from the Westchester Magazine every year since it began in 2010.

One of the keys to Ward’s success has been her background in education. She found that helpful, especially working with buyers. She embraced the new technology that changed the way the brokerages did business.

“I was always comfortable with computers and welcomed the constant challenge of keeping up with the new tools available,'' Ward said.

She has also made it her business to be knowledgeable on the ins and outs of the condominium market. A large part of her business is concentrated in Ossining and Cortlandt and her name is often associated with communities such as Mystic Pointe and Valeria.

Even with the long hours the profession demands, Ward makes time for family and travel. She feels fortunate that she has been able to balance work with babysitting her two grandsons and hosting memorable family gatherings.

In testimonials on her website, clients heartily endorsed her work. One couple wrote: “Barbara Ward is truly excellent -- we had a stellar experience with her both as the agent representing us in a sale, and as the agent handling the sale of our home. She is professional, candid, honest, has a ton of experience and know-how, and is a total pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is considering buying or selling a house -- she is the real deal.”
