Town of Cortlandt Facebook Page Goes Live

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – After months of deliberation over a policy, the Town of Cortlandt's Facebook page has gone live.

"We are very excited to offer this service for our residents and businesses," said Supervisor Linda Puglisi. She said the Facebook page would "provide another way or venue to disseminate information to our residents."

Town officials said the Facebook page would be used to post events and press releases, as well as to disseminate information during emergencies and post streaming video of Town Board meetings.

Officials said the Facebook page would not officially launch until July 1, but posts have already been made by town employees administering the account, and about 50 Facebook users had "liked" the town's page by 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Although the town's Facebook policy reads, "Only the town can post information on this wall. No outside comments or messages will be accepted or received. Facebook users will merely indicate their like of the wall in order to be connected into their Facebook system," users were able to comment on town-generated posts to the social media page, as of Wednesday evening.

Puglisi said the town chose not to allow unique posts to the page because residents can email or call her office if they have concerns. Puglisi said she did not have a personal Facebook page, and the town does not intend to start a Twitter account.

Although the town recently approved a sponsored Facebook page, discussions of the page began in January. At least three "Town of Cortlandt" Facebook pages which are not run by the town had already been created on Facebook.

Pages for "Town of cortlandt youth center," (punctuation is as it appears on the Facebook title page), the "Town of Cortlandt Highway Department," and "Town of Cortlandt Recreation," are live.

The future may hold other technology upgrades for the town. Puglisi said the town is considering a new projector for its main meeting room and could possibly fund the purchase using leftover grant money. Additionally, work sessions could be streamed online in the future. Currently, said town technology specialist Matt Logerfo, Town Board meetings, Planning Board meetings and zoning board meetings are streamed online.
