YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Republican Terrence Murphy has defeated Democrat Justin Wagner in the race for the 40th State Senate District.

Murphy leads Wagner 23,938  votes to 16,456 votes, 56.94 percent to 39.14 percent, according to unofficial results from the state Board of Elections.

"It's exciting times," Murphy said. "This is a great step forward for New York State. We need to make New York a more affordable place for all of us to stay."

Murphy attributed his victory to running a clean campaign on the issues.

"I did not try and give people hyperbole and scare tactics," Murphy said. "A lot of the voters saw through what my opponent was trying to do. I look forward to representing the voters and making New York more affordable."

New York being dead last in business climate and first in taxes is a recipe for disaster, Murphy said. Murphy said he also planned on tackling the heroin epidemic that has plagued the region.

"It is an honor and privilege to be the next state senator," Murphy said. "I'm going to work my tail off."

Murphy, a Yorktown councilman and Wagner, a Croton resident, were running to fill the seat left vacant when State Sen. Greg Ball, a Republican, declined to run for re-election.

The 40th Senate District could decide whether Democrats or Republicans have the majority in the State Senate.

The campaign was particularly nasty with both sides hurling one allegation after another at each other and outside money being spent heavily on both sides.

Wagner lost to Ball in 2012.

The 40th Senate District covers Cortlandt, Peekskill, Yorktown, Somers, Pleasantville, Chappaqua, Mount Kisco, Mount Pleasant, Pound Ridge, Lewisboro, North Salem and parts of Putnam and Dutchess County.
