Update at 2 p.m.: The motorcyclist has been identified as 61-year-old Thomas Hecker, of Verplanck. Hecker was in an induced coma Thursday afternoon and in stable but critical condition.

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- A motorcyclist was severely injured Thursday morning after a crash on John Walsh Boulevard in Peekskill, police said.

The man, whose name and place of residence is being withheld pending notification of family, was traveling northbound on John Walsh Boulevard around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, said Peekskill Police spokesperson Lt. John White. At the same time, a sedan was heading southbound on the road and made a left turn, impeding the motorcycle's path. The motorcyclist then hit the rear bumper of the sedan and was thrown from the motorcycle, White said.

"He was breathing but he wasn't alert or conscious," White said. "He had very severe injuries and sustained severe head trauma."

The man was transported to Westchester Medical Center with what was believed to be non-life threatening injuries, White said.

The male driver of the sedan, of Brooklyn, was issued a traffic citation for failure to yield the right of way, White said.
