Two Dogs Rescued, Dozens Displaced After Fire Breaks Out At Apartment Complex In Westchester

Dozens of people have been displaced after a two-alarm fire broke out at an apartment complex in Westchester on Saturday.

The blaze at 137 Hawthorne Ave. in Yonkers, a four-story building, began around 2:45 p.m. with first-arriving fire units being met by a large volume of fire from a first-floor apartment, said Daniel P. Flynn of the Yonkers Fire Department.

The fire quickly spread to the second-floor apartment directly above, with minor spreads to the third- and fourth-floor apartments directly above, Flynn said.

The main body of the fire was extinguished at around 3:10 p.m. and all residents self-evacuated, Flynn said. All Yonkers FD units were back in service by 5:25 p.m.

Yonkers Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross helped relocate about 25 residents to a temporary shelter at St Peter’s School, according to Flynn.

Five civilians and four firefighters sustained injuries described as minor. Two dogs were rescued by firefighters. A total of 55 firefighters responded.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the YFD Fire Investigation Unit.
