Mitchell Heineman was arrested about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to Orangetown police, who took him into custody on High Avenue in Nyack.

Heineman is accused of driving a car involved in a Suffern crash earlier on Sunday, according to police.

Ramapo investigators had issued a general description of the driver and vehicle suspected of fleeing that crash to local law enforcement agencies.

Heineman was pulled over in Nyack because his car matched the description and had heavy front-end damage that appeared to be the result of a recent crash, according to police.

While speaking with Heineman, officers noticed the "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath," according to Orangetown police, who said the 31-year-old also appeared to have bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

According to authorities, Heineman submitted to a field sobriety test, which he's accused of failing. He later was taken to Orangetown police headquarters in Orangeburg, where he refused to take a Breathalyzer Test, according to police.

Heineman was arrested and later released without bail. According to police, he is to appear in Nyack Village Court on May 2 to answer to a misdemeanor count of DWI.
