Long Island Man Charged With DWI After Crashing Into Police Car

A Long Island man was charged with driving while intoxicated after crashing into a police car.

It happened on Friday, Feb. 14 at around 8:10 p.m. in South Farmingdale, according to police.

An officer responding to a 911 call, operating a marked police car, was traveling south on Merritts Road near the intersection of Country Court when his vehicle was struck by Raymond D. Matos, 65, of Lynbrook, Nassau County Police said.

Matos was operating a 1997 Ford Ecoline van traveling northbound on Merritts Road, operating the vehicle unsafely, according to police.

He failed to yield the right of way and turned left in front of the officer’s vehicle, causing the collision, said police. 

The officer sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local area hospital for treatment.

Matos was charged with:

  • two counts of driving while intoxicated,
  • third-degree assault,
  • and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations. 

He was arraigned on Saturday, Feb. 15 in First District Court in Hempstead.
