CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Superstorm Sandy's wrath was apparent the morning after the storm hit on Oct. 29. Boats along the Hudson River were heaved into the streets, whole swaths of Cortlandt and nearby towns were without power for weeks, the region was heavily damaged, and classes in Cortlandt schools were canceled for a week. This natural disaster made our top stories of 2012.

Readers submitted photos of Superstorm Sandy's wrath in their own backyards. Boats at Hudson Valley Marine in Verplanck were lifted into Kings Ferry Road, and bumped against the guardrail at Lake Meaghah during the storm. Dozens of Croton Yacht Club boats were found in a pile against a fence that separates the club from Elliott Way.

Property damage was worst at the Hudson River shore. Several trailers at the Riveredge Trailer Park in Verplanck were condemned.

Thousands of residents were without power for two weeks. Frustrated village and town politicians came together in the middle of the outage to bash the utility and its preparation for the storm.

The Hendrick Hudson and Croton-Harmon school districts each used all their allotted snow days for the year. For the most part, classes were canceled because roads were impassable. Hen Hud is taking days from spring vacation one by one, on an as-needed basis. Croton-Harmon has a calendar available to parents, which lists the days school will be in session.

Eventually, disaster aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency was made available to Westchester County.
