PEEKSKILL, N.Y. Last year's American Legion Post 274 5K Run For Heroes was a big success and this year, its organizers said the Peekskill event looks to be even bigger.
"As of right now, we've almost doubled the amount of people that have signed up compared to last year at this time," said Post 274 Vice Commander Brendon Fitzgerald.
Participants will meet at 1024 McKinley Street in Peekskill at 9 a.m. Saturday to check in. The race will begin promptly at 10 a.m.
This year the race will also include the heroes challenge, which pits teams of local emergency responders and military personnel against each other.
"On board so far we have White Plains Police Department, Peekskill Police Department, Havestraw is sending a team and we have a team of Marines and we're working on getting the state police," Fitzgerald said.
All proceeds will go to Operation Comfort Warrior, a program that aids wounded soldiers being cared for overseas.
This year's course will also be a bit different than last year's event.
"Instead of the crazy hills that we dealt with last year we plan to go down Washington Street, make a right down South Street, make a right onto Depew Street and all the way down to Franklin, then take Franklin back to Washington down to the American Legion Hall," Fitzgerald said.
The race will conclude at the Peekskill American Legion, 936 McKinley Street, where a free barbecue will take place to thank those who volunteered, participated and donated to the cause. Each participant will receive a race t-shirt as well.
"We'll have a band there and the Peekskill Stage, which is going to be fun, and this year we're raffling off an iPad 2," Fitzgerald said.
Those looking to sign up can do so online at the race Runsignup.com page.
Parking will be available at the Steamfitter's Building at 1024 McKinley Street. The post is also looking for help from anyone who would like to volunteer their time for the event. Those interested can contact Brendon Fitzgerald at (914)482-8230 or by email.
