MTA Tells Metro-North Commuters To Buy New MetroCard Tuesday

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The MTA is asking commuters who purchase the Mail & Ride Unlimited MetroCard to purchase new December tickets before their Tuesday commute.

"We advise that (Tuesday,) customers should purchase a new 30-day unlimited-ride MetroCard from a New York City Transit vending machine or station agent. Mail & Ride customers who receive an unlimited monthly MetroCard as part of their ticket will be issued a credit for $119 to their Mail & Ride account for the month of December to cover the cost of the new monthly MetroCard plus any additional MetroCards and surcharges they may have had to purchase for today," the MTA said in a statement. "We recognize this is an inconvenience; we appreciate your patience and apologize for the error. If you have any questions, please contact railroad customer service by calling 511 from within New York State or 877-690-5114 from Connecticut."

On Monday, a computer glitch left thousands of Metro-North and Long Island railroad commuters stranded when their MetroCards wouldn't allow them through subway turnstiles.

MTA officials said a coding problem allowed 2,828 Metro-North commuters to receive faulty MetroCards via the commuter rail's mail-and-ride program. The problem was more widespread with Long Island Railroad commuters, with an estimated 7,153 customers impacted by the glitch.
