Croton Trustee Schmidt Will Not Seek Re-Election

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – During a contentious public hearing Monday night on the proposed Harmon rezoning law, Croton Trustee Greg Schmidt said he would not seek re-election.

After a member of the public shouted that Schmidt was “campaigning” as he criticized other members of the Board of Trustees over the proceedings, Schmidt said, “I’m not running again.”

Schmidt’s supporters shouted that he should reconsider. During a break, many pressed him to run again.

“I need to take care of my personal life, and this is also a frustrating process,” he said of the proposed Harmon rezoning law and about serving on the board. One of the proposed rezoning law’s most vocal critics, Schmidt said during the public hearing, “None of the things of this law do the things you want to so for the residents.”

Schmidt is the sole Republican-backed member of the Croton Board of Trustees.

Some landlords are “greedy,” he said, which is why commercial spaces in Harmon have been vacant for so long. And Schmidt said the board was pandering to developers.

“The biggest is dealing with a board that doesn’t listen,” he said after the hearing. “I think that every political position should have defined term limits.”

Democratic Trustee Ann Gallelli’s term will also end in November, but she said Monday evening she had not decided whether she would seek another term.

One of the only confirmed candidates for trustee is 22-year-old Kevin Davis. He has announced his candidacy and is seeking the Democratic nomination.
