Man Steals Nearly $4K in Thermostats From Home Depot In Hudson Valley, To Spend Years In Jail

A Manhattan man who stole thousands of dollars worth of smart thermostats from a Home Depot in Putnam County will serve years in state prison, prosecutors announced.

Tyrell Reynolds, age 38, of Manhattan, pleaded guilty on Tuesday, April 15, to fourth-degree grand larceny for a brazen retail theft at a Home Depot store in Southeast, Putnam County District Attorney Robert V. Tendy announced on Wednesday, April 16. 

The incident happened on Aug. 24, 2024, when sheriff's deputies were called to the Home Depot on Independent Way after a report of a theft involving smart home thermostats valued at $3,956.61. Upon arrival, deputies reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses. 

According to the DA's Office, Reynolds hid several smart thermostats inside a black bin and attempted to walk out of the store. He was confronted by loss prevention staff but fled before deputies arrived. 

After an extensive investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Reynolds was identified and later apprehended.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday, May 13, to a term of two to four years in state prison.
