MONTROSE, N.Y. -- Heather LaRose, a singer/songwriter who grew up singing in school and church plays, will be performing with her band at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Croton Arts Festival.

The 23-year-old performer who graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School, said she began writing songs when she was in fifth grade. "I remember being so nervous turning it in because it was about the boy in my class," said the Montrose native. "Singing is something that has always been a part of my life."

And though she's past the fifth grade boy crush, she told Daily Voice a lot of what she sings about are life experiences. "When I first started writing I'd go down to the Hudson with my notebook and guitar to reflect on my feelings," she said. "I still have a very similar process. Most times I get this really cool chorus stuck in my head and then grab my guitar and sit by the river.

"If I'm in Westchester I go to George's Island Park but if I'm in the city I go down to Battery Park and find my favorite top secret bench right on the Hudson." (She presently lives in both NYC and Westchester.)

Her writing is also influenced by some of her favorite bands -- think The Beach Boys, ABBA, Bruce Spingsteen -- alongside current groups like Imagine Dragons and Walk The Moon.
