BREWSTER, N.Y. The Quakers ice hockey team hit the ice last week in the Brewster Ice Rink Thanksgiving Tournament, taking two of their first three matches and establishing a strong base for the coming season.
Greeley played well in its 4-2 opening-round loss to a good John Jay team but recovered and skated to victories over Somers/North Salem and John F. Kennedy/Putnam squad in the final two games of the tournament.
The Quakers opened a 2-1 lead on John Jay In the opening game on goals by senior Sam Spar and freshman Scott Jakubowicz before losing the game in the final six minutes. Goaltender Neil Hershman made 37 saves in the loss.
The game was played before a huge crowd of 400-plus John Jay students and a very vocal, although much smaller group of Greeley fans.
Sophomore Michael Yablon opened the second game against Somers/North Salem with a quick goal on a perfect set up pass from senior Justin Grossman and the Quakers went on to a 6-2 victory for their first win of the season. Goals by sophomore Owen Gatto, freshman Sam Mishkind and junior Nick Girardi rounded out the scoring.
The Quakers followed with a 5-2 victory over game JFK, outshooting their opponent 41 to 24 and a typical standout defensive effort led by Gatto, freshmen Greg Krisberg and Henry Girardi and sophomores Dean Klein and Jacob Sandor.
Greeley next hosts Nyack/Tappan Zee at Brewster Ice Arena on Sunday at 6:20 pm.
