Breaking News: 'Widespread' Flu Activity Now Reported In New York: Here Are Counties Most Affected

Chappaqua's Duncalf Flies To County Swim Title

RYE, N.Y. – As soon as Katie Duncalf completed her qualifying heat in the girl’s 17-and-under 200-yard individual medley and heard her time, she wanted to get right into her next race.

Duncalf was angry because she did not qualify for the final, which meant she could not score any points for her Chappaqua Swim & Dive Team in the 87th annual Westchester Counties Swimming and Diving Championships at the pool at Playland Amusement Park in Rye.

When Duncalf returned to the pool later in the evening, the Horace Greeley senior-to-be achieved her goal. The 17-year-old Duncalf won the 100-yard butterfly, but, more importantly, she secured the points for her team.

“I felt great after the fly and back,” said Duncalf of the 200 IM. “Then, in the breaststroke, my arms and legs went dead. I come to this meet to have fun and do well for my team and I was most disappointed because I didn’t score any points for my team.

“That motivated me in the fly. I wanted those team points because I didn’t want to let the team down. I was also the defending champion.”

Duncalf earned the top seed after the heats and then went out and added her second consecutive title.

“In the finals I was so relaxed,” Duncalf said. “In the second half of the race, I felt strong and I was focusing on my stroke technique. I was also able to drop my prelim time by a second.”

Duncalf will swim the freestyle, backstroke and medley relay during the last two days of the championships.
