Brown Fuels Greeley to Basketball Tournament Final

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - Horace Greeley’s double-digit lead had dwindled to five points midway through the third quarter and with it, Somers’ confidence was rising, Tuesday.

The Quakers, who had had been a little out of sync, offensively, during this mini Tuskers’ run, settled down. Once they did, the Quakers answered with a spurt of its own and then went to their big man -- Harrison Brown.

Brown scored his team’s first eight points of the fourth quarter and Greeley was never challenged after that in a 58-46 victory over Somers in a first-round game at the 15th annual George Budries Basketball Tournament at Yorktown.

Greeley will play Dobbs Ferry in the title game, 5 p.m., Wednesday. Somers will meet Yorktown in the consolation game, 1 p.m.

Brown led all scorers with 19 points and he grabbed 12 rebounds. Brett Klein added 12 points and point guard Josh Rosen finished with seven points and seven assists. “I think we took them for granted,” said Brown, once his team got to a double-digit lead. “Coach told us not to fall asleep.“Once we hit a couple of big shots in the third quarter, we kept it going.”

Horace Greeley had its’ lead at 14 points -- 34-20 -- early in the third quarter, but Somers closed to five points -- 36-31 -- lead by John Decker, who had 18 points. That was the closest Somers would get. Greeley scored eight of the next 10 points and closed the quarter with a 44-36 lead.

The fourth quarter belonged to Brown. The 6-foot-4 junior forward scored there of his four baskets on feeds from Rosen.

“They had come back before so I didn’t want them to come back again,” Brown said.Greeley’s defense suffocated Somers in the fourth, holding the Tuskers without a field goal for 5:29.
