Westorchard First-Graders Enjoy Thanksgiving Feast

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Westorchard Elementary School looked more like Plymouth colony on Monday, as first-graders continued the school's annual tradition of a Thanksgiving feast. For their regularly scheduled lunch period, students dressed as Pilgrims and Native Americans while snacking on some holiday treats.

Parents contributed and served items such as applesauce pie, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and chocolate chip cookies to accompany the school's chicken nuggets. "It's a Westorchard first-grade tradition," said Westorchard Assistant Principal Tammy Ghirardi.

Before the meal students joined together in singing Thanksgiving songs they learned in school, such as “November Days,” “Mr. Turkey,” “A Turkey Ran Away” and “Albuquerque Turkey.”

After the sing-a-long, first-graders raised their hands and one-after-one listed what they were thankful for. “I’m thankful for my family,” said one first-grader. Other students named pets, school, friends, homes, and more as what they were most thankful for.

"I think all of the teachers are thankful for all the first-graders at Westorchard," said teacher Elizabeth Morhardt when it was her turn to share.
