NEW CASTLE, N.Y. - With as much as a foot of snow expected to hit the region, officials in New Castle are urging residents to use caution and properly prepare for the upcoming blizzard.

According to the New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the state is anticipating that between 16 and 20 inches of snow may fall in the lower Hudson Valley, with more than a foot coming to upstate New York. State police have cautioned that the storm may impact the region until Wednesday night, causing a combination of low visibility and slippery roadways, creating “treacherous travel conditions.”

“The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for this area. A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring,” police cautioned. “Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.”

Residents that need to report downed wires, blocked road or non-life-threatening injuries can call (914) 238-4422. Downed wires are to be treated “as if they were live.” Anyone that experiences power outages can call Con Edison directly at 1-800-75-CONED. Downed trees can be reported to police at (914) 654-2300.

“Plan on not driving for at least tomorrow and the possibility of being stuck in your home for days,” police noted. “This means having a supply of water, food, medication and whatever else you may need to outlast the storm. New York State provides a full list of emergency supplies for your home and vehicles.”
