Chappaqua Schools Finalize 2012-13 Calendar

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Chappaqua Central School District announced it will be able to keep most of its 2012-13 February break after receiving word that the New York State Board of Regents will not drastically alter the date of its exams in 2013.

According to Superintendent Lyn McKay, the state was considering moving up 2013's regents rating day to June 14, after which the district cannot bring students back to school.

"We have learned that rating day will be the 21st of June, which means that we don’t have to worry about closing school on the 14th of June, which is a very good thing," said McKay.

The decision allowed the district to finalize its school calendar for the 2012-13 year and keep three vacation days in tact next February. The mid-winter break will run from Monday, Feb. 18 to Wednesday Feb. 20, and students will be in school for the remainder of the week.

While the board of education was pleased with the decision to not move the regents exams up, some members hoped to see vacations days spread out throughout the school year rather than bunched together.

"I wish we were able to spread the days off between April, May and June," said board member Jeffrey Mester.

According to board President Alyson Kiesel, state mandates restricted the district in altering much about the calendar. "We don’t have that much flexibility so we can’t be very creative," she said.

One noticeable difference with the 2012-13 school year is with the Board of Education meeting dates, which will be moved on Wednesday nights instead of Tuesday. The change allows the school board and New Castle Town Board to work together more since meetings will no longer be held at the same time.
