Superintendent Lyn McKay and Assistant Superintendent Andrew Selesnick sent out the following letter Wednesday afternoon:
Dear Grafflin Families,
We are writing to update you on the search for Grafflin's next Principal. As we have indicated from the beginning, it is most important that we continue searching until we find the best possible candidate to lead our school.
While we initially received a good number of applicants, there was not a large pool of qualified candidates to move to the next stage. As a result, we have decided to extend the search process a little longer.
This coming Sunday, February 10th, there will be another advertisement in the New York Times. Applications will be accepted until March 1. Some of those candidates who applied initially will remain candidates, while we continue searching to increase the size of the qualified applicant pool.
We expect to interview more candidates beginning in early March, and look forward to updating you on the progress of our search soon after that.
Sincerely, Lyn McKay, Superintendent of Schools
Andrew Selesnick, Assistant Superintendent for Leadership Development and Human Resources The first round of interviews was scheduled for this week, with finalists for the position hopefully to be chosen by the end of the month. It appears now that the end of March will be the new target date for that decision.
McKay and the school board said from the beginning that if they were not satisfied with their candidate pool, they would not hesitate to reboot the interview process.
“It is extremely important we find someone we are excited to have here for the long haul,” said Selesnick at a January Board of Education meeting.
The district began accepting applications in December, after current principal Michael Kirsch announced he would be retiring in September. It is only the third time it has had to search for a new principal in the school’s 50-year history.
