Officers from the Yonkers Police Department were dispatched to an apartment on Saratoga Avenue shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, where there were reports of gunshots fired.

Upon arrival, Yonkers Police Det. Lt. Dean Politopoulos said that officers found a 43-year-old woman with gunshots to her abdomen.

Politopoulos said that the investigation determined that the woman lived in an apartment with several other people, including her 24-year-old son, who got into a dispute with a neighbor, later identified as Michael Santiago.

According to investigators, the verbal altercation became physical, with Santiago brandishing a knife in the process before leaving the area. However, Politopoulos said that 20 minutes later, Santiago returned and fired several gunshots through the apartment’s front door, striking his victim.

After shooting through the door, Santiago allegedly went outside and fired several more shots into his victim’s apartment window before fleeing on foot.

The gunshot victim was treated at the scene and transported to an area hospital for treatment. She is currently listed in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

Santiago was arrested on Sunday, Nov. 22 without incident, at which time he was in possession of an illegal Ruger LCP .380 caliber handgun.

Santiago was charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Yonkers Criminal Court on Monday, Nov. 23.

“When people resort to violence to resolve conflict, everybody loses,” Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller said. “Violence - especially gun violence - has no place in our communities, and the Yonkers Police is committed to deploying every available resource to hold these individuals accountable who would instigate violence and perpetrate crime.”
