During a ceremony for the 140th Session Basic Recruit Class, County Executive Rob Astorino reminded parents how quickly "your little boys and girls have grown up."

"This isn't a Wimbleton (tennis) match. This is a big day,'' Astorino said. "You can hoot and holler."

The new officers completed 20 weeks of training at a newly-renovated police academy in Valhalla, 10 times the length of the first class held in 1959, according to county Public Safety Commissioner George N. Longworth. He said they are the first class to graduate from a newly-renovated training academy after a $10 million county investment.

Reflecting on "the horrific" attacks in Paris and San Bernadino, Calif., Astorino noted that the curriculum included substantial counter-terrorism

“We have prepared these new officers as best we can to respond to the worst incidents we can imagine – from active-shooter events to incidents involving weapons of mass destruction," Astorino said. "It is our prayer that they never have to do so. But while we hope for the best, we have prepared them for the worst."

Longworth presented the new officers with their certificates while welcoming them “to the Westchester law enforcement family and the best job on Earth.”
