"Tragically, last night we lost another member of our NYPD family to suicide," said NYPD Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill. "We vow to keep fighting this fight, to do better on these and many other fronts, and to put a stop to this epidemic once and for all."
The 33-year-old victim has been identified as Linhong Li, according to multiple sources. He was assigned to work at the 24th Precinct on Manhattan's Upper West Side, said the NYPD.
Li shot himself in the head at his home in Utopia, the sources said. He was found by his wife around 9:30 p.m.
The department had declared a mental health crisis after four officers killed themselves in June and is urging officers to seek treatment when in distress.
Since that time, NYPD Officer Robert Echeverria, who grew up in West Islip and lived in Laurelton, Queens, killed himself in August.
"There is no shame in seeking assistance from the many resources available, both inside and outside the department," said O'Neill in a statement on June 14. "Accepting help is never a sign of weakness — in fact, it's a sign of great strength."
