New Castle Officials Offer Sewer District Update

MILLWOOD, N.Y. - On the first Thursday of every month, the Millwood Task Force meets with elected officials and residents to engage in a dialogue on issues they believe are important. Here are some of the main issues discussed at a recent meeting.

Update on Croton Watershed Sewer District

After Westchester County legislators approved the inclusion of Yeshiva, Riverwoods and Random Farms into the Croton Watershed in December, town officials have been working towards appropriating the funds for the project.

“The county has to appropriate the money, they will not do it until the odor control for Yonkers is designed,” said Town Supervisor Susan Carpenter. “They expect that to be done in June.”

Carpenter reiterated that there is no construction timetable because the process of getting permits and other issues could take years to resolve.

Task force member Jordan Schiffman wondered if New Castle was planning for the possibility that the Millwood business district could also be included in sewer construction. Carpenter said that even if the town installs pipes large enough to handle Millwood, the decision to include the area into the watershed lies with the county.

Reappointment of Millwood Task Force Members

Carpenter said Millwood Task Force members Dianne Kleinmann, Phil Rice and Nicole Riche will all be re-appointed at the New Castle Town Board’s next meeting on Feb. 14.

Task force member Michael Stern raised concerns that some members are not making enough of a commitment and have regularly missed meetings. To remedy the situation, Carpenter recommended the task force state a policy regarding the allowable number of meetings members can miss in a calendar year and still remain a member.

Update on Millwood’s New Signs

Three new signs to be placed at the intersection of Shingle House Road and Route 100, A&P and a yet-to-be-determined location have not been installed. Town Administrator Penny Paderewski said the plan was to have the signs up in the spring, as the ground was expected to be too cold in the winter to get proper footing. One of the smaller signs may be hung before the spring due to an existing post at Shingle House Road.

Joint Town Board and Task Force Meeting

The Millwood Task Force and the New Castle Town Board will convene for a joint meeting at Westorchard Elementary School on March 13. The meeting will act as a regular town board meeting and will also replace the scheduled March 1 task force meeting.

After the board goes through its regular agenda, which will begin at 7:45 p.m., the board will welcome task force members to join them and discuss any topics or issues.

Since town board meetings are televised, Kleinmann hopes to use the stage to invite more participation in the task force,  which she said is actively searching for members. “We could use more members. We could use more people to get involved,” she said.
