New Castle Clean-Up Day Targets Debris, Litter

NEW CASTLE, N.Y. - Beautification Advisory Board members are asking residents to do their part in cleaning up debris scattered throughout New Castle during the town-wide clean-up Saturday.

"My concern now is for the abandoned piles of branches," said board Co-Chair Monica Dejanosi.

Dejanosi is hoping to see more emphasis given to cleaning up branches and twigs. She said some have been left on the sides of the roads, piled onto front lawns, dumped into empty lots or discarded between private properties.

"We are aware of the extremely unusual weather of the past year, which caused so much tree damage," Dejanosi said. "The highway department picked up the town's portion. It is not the town's responsibility to remove branches that were hauled out from the backs of gardens and are not on the town's property or its right of way."

Residents who have not discarded branches from the storm still may bring the debris directly to the recycling center on Hunts Lane. Dejanosi said she also will be asking local tree companies to join the board with volunteer pick-ups.

"There is no reason for New Castle to look quite so neglected and unkempt," she said. "Let's have some more pride in how our town could and should look."

According to Dejanosi, cleaning stations with plastic gloves and bags will be set up throughout New Castle Saturday for residents wanting help picking up litter. Stations will be in front of the farmers' market. next to the pocket park near Susan Lawrence, in front of Bank of America and at Millwood Hardware.
