CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- A homeowner and her dog managed to escape Sunday as a fire destroyed their two-and-a-half story home at 16 Bessel Lane, just north of Wampus Lake Reservoir.
More than 50 firefighters spent several hours battling the blaze, which broke out shortly after 3 p.m., said Chappaqua Fire Chief Greg Bologna.
Bologna said the fire rapidly spread from the first floor to the attic and roof which had wood shingles. The roof then collapsed onto the second floor, destroying the entire home.
The homeowner, who smelled smoke and called 911, escaped without injuries.
"Luckily she was able to get out of the home and no one was injured," Bologna said.
The chief said this is the second fire he has worked in the same area in which the home had wood shingles and was destroyed.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but may be electrical in nature.
Firefighters from multiple municipalities assisted including Armonk, Bedford Hills, Mount Kisco and Pleasantville. Many remained on scene until after 9 p.m. putting out hot spots.
