Chappaqua Board of Ed Honors Retirees, Adds Byrne

The Chappaqua School District honored their 19 retirees Tuesday at the Board of Education Meeting. The principals from Douglas Griffin and Westorchard Elementary Schools, Robert E. Bell Middle School and Horace Greeley High School presented each retirees and their list of accomplishments.

From the Chappaqua School District, 11 teachers, one nurse, one teacher’s aide and six members of the support staff are retiring this summer or have already retired this past winter.

Principal Mike Kirsch from Douglas Grafflin Elementary School announced the retirement of Patricia Carney after Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lyn McCay spoke about the contributions of Sel Shimmerlik, who worked at Douglas Grafflin, Westorchard Elementary Schools, and Bell Middle School, in her more than 30 years of service.

Principal Jim Skoog from Westorchard Elementary School introduced six retiring teachers: Patricia Papi, Marjorie Milstein, Elizabeth DeGaetani, Ann Peterson, Amy Harland, Elizabeth O’Toole and Kathleen McGowan -- the longtime secretary to the principal at Westorchard.

Principal Martin Fitzpatrick of Bell Middle School introduced seven retirees which combine for an approximate 200 years of service. Fitzpatrick noted the accomplishments of Walter Hartsburg, Louise Lubin, Phyllis Bellofatto, Helen Lynn, Cheryl Melnyk, Phyllis Yuen and Lois Sommer, who are retiring at the conclusion of this month.

Principal Andrew Selesnick mentioned his two retirees, Anita Faria, a science teacher at Horace Greeley High School, and Karen Schnell, a teaching assistant who retired on March 3.

In a related note, the Board approved the appointment of Eric Byrne, the district’s newest Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, which will take effect on July 1. Byrne is currently the principal at Roaring Brook Elementary School and previously has been the principal at Pound Ridge Elementary School in Bedford and at Public School 183 in New York City.
