Volunteer Center Honors Chappaqua Resident

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – The Volunteer Center of United Way plans to honor eight individuals and groups from Westchester during National Volunteer Week this year.

The 32nd Annual Volunteer Spirit Awards will take place between 8 and 10 a.m. on April 20 at the Hilton in Rye. Lou Young, a CBS 2 journalist, will emcee the event.

“We applaud the invaluable contributions of all volunteers who effect change in our neighborhoods,” Alisa H. Kesten, executive director, said. “The Volunteer Spirit Awards celebrate the ways the young and young at heart use professional skills, talents and enthusiasm to give back 365 days a year.”

The honorees were selected by a panel of judges.

Judith Weber of New Rochelle has been chosen to receive the arts and culture award for her work to expand cultural activities city-wide as part of the New Rochelle Council on the Arts

Larchmont's Nicole Sheindlin has been awarded the education and literacy award for her work in creating a mentoring program that pairs young women with professional women.

Eastchester resident Peter McCartt will receive the going green award for his work on the Eastchester Environmental Committee and SWEAC.

Cynthia Odell of Yonkers will receive the health and safety award for her work at the Afya Foundation, an international medical organization.

Chappaqua resident Louis Thomason will be awarded the quality of life award for his work at Richmond Community Services to enhance assistive technology for people with significant intellectual disabilities and creating an intranet platform to help internal staff knowledge sharing.

Mt. Kisco resident Pat Rosafort will be awarded the social advocacy award for her work at Hope's Door, a domestic violence shelter.

A volunteer ESL tutors group, the Neighbors Link High School Volunteer ESL Tutors Group, will receive the New York Life youth group award for their work in teaching English.

New Rochelle resident Jake Gallin will receive the New York Life youth leader award for his work with Stars for Cars, a fundraising effort that helps the USO.
