Smith, Former Westchester DA Secretary, Dies at 94

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Florence A. Smith, of Chappaqua, died Dec. 25. She was 94.

Smith served as president of the Westchester County Legal Secretaries Association and was executive secretary to two Westchester district attorneys.

Born in New Jersey on July 31, 1917, she was the daughter of Paul and Elizabeth Mode. Smith graduated from White Plains High School and the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. in 1940. After graduating, she moved to New York City where she met and married her husband Willard Smith at Riverside Church. They moved to Chappaqua in 1955.

For 20 years, Smith worked as legal secretary for the Office of the District Attorney. She retired after working as executive secretary for district attorneys Carl A. Vergari and Jeanine Pirro.

Smith served as president of the Riverside Church Young Peoples Guild as well as deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Congregational Church in Chappaqua. She was a member of the Westchester Emergency Communications Association and a family member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. 

Since high school, Smith was an avid fencer and only slowed down after breaking her hip on her 88th birthday.

She is survived by her sons Dwight and Scott and her brother Robert Mode.

Visiting is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville. Services will be held at the First Congregational Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Interment will follow at Fair Ridge Cemetery in Chappaqua.
