Safety Takes Center Stage At Firehouses in New Castle

CHAPPAQUA,NY--Dozens turned out for Open House Day Sunday for two firehouses in New Castle. One was held at the Chappaqua Fire Department on Bedford Road, the other at the Millwood Fire Company No. 1 in Millwood. The events featured hands-on demonstrations allowing children to use a fire hose, see firefighters use the so-called "jaws of life" to rescue someone "injured" in a mock car accident, and rides in a firetruck. Children were also treated to a video highlighting fire safety.

The Open Houses were designed to help recruit volunteers from the community. Gary Murphy, a resident of Chappaqua, said the program impressed him, "I just got my membership packet and I am going back later this week to check out joining."

In addition to the fire safety activities and videos, there were plenty of balloons, hot dogs, chili and cold drinks for the youngsters. In Milwood, members of the local Masonic Lodge provided special digital photos and fingerprinting for kids who signed up for the NY Masonic Safety ID Program.  Participants' personal information was entered into a central database along with the individual's digitized fingerprints and photograph. The information was then given to parents on a CD and an ID card was printed and laminated in the event the child is ever lost or missing.
