Chappaqua Mom Joins Open Door Foundation Board

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. --Sue Greene Fuirst has been named to the board of the Open Doors Medical Center, board chairman David Sherman announced. Fuirst, a Chappaqua resident, has been a member of Open Door for only year but has already made an impact, Sherman said.

“I joined a year ago at the Elvis Costello concert. I found Open Door really intriguing and I think the concept of a medical center for all is something that we need,” Fuirst said. “In a way, a lot of people think that anybody in this county can afford anything they want, and that’s not true, myself included.”

Fuirst became interested in Open Door and called and offered to volunteer. From there she became involved with Reach Out And Read, a program she’s been involved with for 10 months.

It is a literacy program which brings the concept of literacy to children. Books are distributed to kids in the waiting room at Open Door and volunteers, like Fuirst, read to them.

“They go in, and I see a kid that’s four or five years old and I pick up an age appropriate book and offer to sit down and read them that book,” Fuirst said. “Usually the parents don’t speak English or don’t have the time to sit down and read with the child.”

Fuirst is also known in the area for her work, as owner of Basics Fuirst, a cooking school providing in-home classes for families and students.

After just a year with Open Door, Fuirst was asked to help the Foundation Board which generates awareness and developments fundraising and charitable donations.

“I’m the quintessential PTA mom,” Fuirst said. “I’ve been on all the committees and all the boards at the schools so I guess being on the foundation board is a good fit! I’m thrilled about it. It’s a great organization and I’m really flattered that they asked me.”
