Chappaqua Holding First Summer Blood Drive Sunday

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Chappaqua's first annual Summer Community Blood Drive is scheduled to take place Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Church of Saint John & Saint Mary.

The blood drive is expected to raise more than 35 pints to help reduce the blood shortage in the Hudson Valley during the summer months, said Robin Friehling, of the Greater New York Blood Program office in Elmsford.

“There is a great need in July," said Debbie Kleinman of the New York Blood Center.  "We appreciate the Church's and Monsignor Thomas Gilleece's efforts to host the drive at this critical time."

The Church is located at 30 Poillon Road off King Street and across from Lange's Deli. Potential donors are encouraged to sign up in advance by calling (914) 238-8444, emailing, or by signing up in the Church lobby. Walk-ins will be welcomed as well.

"It's particularly important to give blood in the summer as the need is up but all too often donations take a vacation along with our Chappaqua and Millwood donors," said John Ehrlich, the volunteer coordinator for the drive. "It's the one gift I can afford to give this year."

Babysitting will be provided by teenage volunteers so parents will be able to bring their children. The drive will run concurrently with the Sunday masses, which are scheduled at 7:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and noon.

New Castle Town Board members, town judges, the town attorney and other town employees are expected to donate at the blood drive. Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino has also donated to New Castle blood drives in the past, said Ehrlich.
